In the summer of 2005, a group of film-lovers in Shanghai got together
and decided it was time to make filmmaking accessible to the public.
The task at bay was not easy, but the infant film movement had an
attitude: Meiwenti, which means "No problem" in Mandarin Chinese.
After a lot of struggle, hard-work, laughter and even some tears,
Meiwenti prevailed!
The first Meiwenti community-based production was a micro-budget
feature-length comedy titled 90 Days Visa. More than 100 people
donated their effort and talent into making it a success.
Today, these bad boys & girls of film are a symbol of independent film
in the city. Meiwenti has produced a few indie films, inspired a
constant flow of short film projects, organised seven Short Film
Contests and fostered a multi-cultural community of filmmakers in
Shanghai.
The film contests generated more than 70 improvised short films
produced specifically for the contests. Hundreds of actors and crew
were involved in getting first-hand film experience. Thousands of
people have participated in these exciting events over the years.
Some Meiwenti members started out as amateurs, but have now moved into
professional video production, TV and film. Some professionals that
have participated have renewed their love of film for the sheer joy of
it.
